DOES THE CULTURE EFFECT PEOPLE'S VIEWPOINT ON CHILDABUSE?
India
Child abuse in India is often a hidden phenomenon especially when it happens in homes or by family members. It is also hard to obtain the number of abusive parents as many of these crimes go unreported. This is solely due to the variation of perspective, what a westerner considers as child abuse such as beating children, would be normal in India (Nair, 2015). Some forms of child abuse such as child labor or prostitution are reported, but even this is often reported by an anonymous source and most parents from poorer backgrounds don't even view this as a form of abuse.
In Chennai, my home city, I have seen many kids younger than me working at coffee doing jobs that should such as cooking near oil which is very dangerous. I talked with one boy near who works at a shop near my house and he said that his parents, who were farmers in a small village, sent him to the city to work after he had failed a few of his tests. He said he refused at first but his parents beat him and sent him to work in the city for a small wage.
Many Indian parents are not aware of the fact that screaming or hitting their children is a form of abuse and can cause serious mental damage to the child. Thier ways of disciplining as beating have been the primary mode of discipline for many generations, and parents today are unable to understand that their methods are abuse and not discipline.
South Korea
Child abuse is becoming more and more serious problem in Korea. 1.10 in every 1000 children were reported to be abused at least once in the year 2014 (Herald, 2015). There are diverse forms of abuse, and in most cases, more than one type of abuse was involved, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and child neglect (Hyeouk and Neil, 2001).
Although laws regarding the human rights of children have been there since the 1960s, the issue received limited public attention (Ministry of Health and Welfare, n.d.). While people are becoming more and more aware of abuses in public facilities (such as kindergartens), they still have no clue to the seriousness of abuses in homes. In most cases, parents do not even realize that their actions are a form of abuse.
Corporal punishment has been in the root of Korea’s convention since long ago. People believed that this punishment is beneficial to education, allowing children to arouse their mistakes. As a result, they acted as the fundamental punishments both at homes and schools since Joseon dynasty era (NAVER, n.d.).
Korean parents are also comparably less concerned with their children’s self-esteem. Most would just point out their children’s mistake directly, which often results in a form of verbal abuse, giving fatal damage to their confidence and esteem.
In addition, many Koreans still view this issue as a private family matter, which does not need criminal justice system to be involved (Woo, 2014). They treat it as a form of education. It is crucial for Korean parents to realize their mistakes.
Taiwan
According to the laws and regulation in Taiwan, child abuse consists of four general categories- physical abuse, psychological abuse, sexual abuse or impaired health care as a result of neglect. In Taiwan, they do consider hitting children as a child abuse, but in fact, some of the parents don’t really value the consequence of child abuse.
Based on the statistical data of children’s bureau of the interior ministry, the number of child abuse cases increased from 5058 to 7975 in only 4 years, approximately 60% of growth. Among the inflictors, 76.26% of them are identified as parents or foster parent. In 2005, a child abuse issue happened as a result of drunkenness and emotional instability of the inflictor, which caused the four years old child to death. The issue shocked everyone and raised much more awareness to the society.
In the previous Taiwanese notion of education, they believe in the quote "spare the rod and spoil the child," although some of the parents still believe that children can gain better achievement under a stick parenting education. However, the notion varies with the change of generation, human right, and laws. Meanwhile, the stress which caused by economics fluctuation or life’s struggles increased gradually with the variation of evolved society, this could lead to deviant behavior to the adult as well as increase the probability of child abuse.
